PROPAGANDA CAN MAKE HISTORY
Below are two opposing accounts as they may have been reported by a loyalist and a revolutionary
concerning the Boston Massacre. See if you can identify who wrote what and explain why you say
that.
MASSACRE OF PATRIOTS
Listen Patriots! — and all others who love liberty and oppose the godless tyrant — our lives
and honor have been defiled. Our peaceful, law-abiding, freedom-loving brothers have been
heedlessly and brutally MASSACRED while on their way home. Mindless Redcoats — the henchmen of
the immoral king — went wild in the streets firing indiscriminately at children and women. When
their ammunition gave out and their fear of God had returned, these murderers had filled the
streets with blood and death. Can we take this and remain men? Will we? Our efforts to work
through the corrupt legal system have repeatedly failed. Shall we continue to be slaughtered by
these barbarians? JOIN with the leaders of Boston. UNITE AGAINST the ENEMIES of FREEDOM, TRUTH,
JUSTICE, and LIFE itself.
SENSELESS RIOT QUELLED
Another wanton act of violence! When will these rabble-rousers learn the age-old lesson of
history: that violence is never justified in the eyes of God. The Divine investiture of
authority — the King — has sent the army there to protect us as we live peacefully and by law.
Law is supreme. Order is divine. Our rights have been violated by these conspirators. They
attacked the guards after being emitted by demagogues, in self-defense the guards fired back at
the mob. People were wounded. The blame naturally lies with these revolutionaries who have no
respect for law and order and traditional principles. We plea for reason and respect of
authority.
